History
John William Smith (1792-1845) was a Virginia-born Texian who served as a courier at the Alamo and became the first mayor of San Antonio in 1837. He died at Washington-on-the-Brazos in January 1845 while serving in the Republic's Congress, and a state marker was placed there in 1936; his remains were later moved to the Washington City Cemetery.
