History

Independence Hall at Washington-on-the-Brazos is a reconstruction of the building where 59 delegates adopted the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836, proclaiming Texas a sovereign nation. The declaration, drafted largely by George Childress, was read and adopted unanimously. A first replica was built in the 1920s on the original foundation stones and rebuilt in 1969.
