History

Dr. Asa Hoxey was a physician and planter who established plantations at Coles Settlement in Washington County, later renamed Independence, a name he is credited with proposing to celebrate the Texas Declaration of Independence in 1836. His home became a gathering place for leaders of the Republic of Texas, and he was said to own one of the finest private libraries in the republic. He died in 1863 and is buried in the Old Independence Cemetery.
