History

Danevang Lutheran Cemetery lies at the heart of Danevang, the only Danish colony settlement in Texas, founded in south Wharton County in 1894 by the Dansk Folkesamfund (Danish People's Society). Some seventy families, many directly from Denmark, arrived in the first year, and the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church supported the colony as a place to preserve Danish culture. The five-acre cemetery, laid out in 189 lots, was consecrated in 1895, and its headstones are inscribed almost entirely in Danish.
