History
The Wheeler Historical Museum, in the former American Legion building in Wheeler, has been developed by local volunteers since about 2014. Its signature subject is Wheeler native Capt. Alan L. Bean, the fourth man to walk on the Moon, honored with a larger-than-life bronze statue unveiled in 2017 and exhibits on his Navy and NASA career, including Apollo 12 and Skylab. The museum also covers the Red River War of 1874-1875 and county veterans; Wheeler County, organized in 1879, was the first organized county in the Panhandle.
