History

The Sheppard Air Force Base Heritage Center in Wichita Falls chronicles the history of Sheppard Field, established in 1941 and named for Texas U.S. Senator Morris Sheppard, who had died six months earlier. The center features more than 30 displays covering base and aviation history, along with a theater, a POW memorial, uniforms, and equipment. Sheppard evolved from World War II mechanic and pilot training into today's broad instruction under the 82nd Training Wing.
