History
The Waggoner Mansion, also known as El Castile, is a 16-room Victorian house built in 1883 for cattleman Daniel Waggoner in Decatur. Constructed of solid limestone, it served as headquarters for the vast Waggoner Ranch, which by 1900 spanned over a million acres and ran some 60,000 head of cattle. The house passed briefly to the Bellah family before the Waggoners reacquired and restored it; it was designated a Texas Historical Landmark in 1962 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
