History

El Castile, the sixteen-room Waggoner Mansion, was built in 1883 in Decatur for cattleman Daniel Waggoner, founder of the Waggoner Ranch. An outstanding example of Victorian masonry, its exterior and interior walls are solid porous limestone, and the house retains about ninety percent of its original craftsmanship. Inherited by W.T. Waggoner and later sold in 1942, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places; filmmakers duplicated its exterior for the movie Giant.
