History

Proffitt Cemetery marks the site of the former community of Proffitt, named for the family of Robert Smith Proffitt, who settled here about 1862. The cemetery's first burial came on July 17, 1867, when three young men killed in an Indian raid were interred in a common grave on John Proffitt's land. Many interments are of infants and children, and the largest number of burials fell between 1910 and 1920, including victims of the World War I-era influenza epidemic.
