About this tour

Downtown Austin holds the densest concentration of stages in the state, packed into a few walkable blocks between two music districts. This route runs from the historic Sixth Street strip — the old Victorian entertainment core — over to the Red River Cultural District, the newer rock-club corridor the city formally recognized to protect its venues. Along the way it passes a jazz basement, a 1915 movie-and-vaudeville palace, and a barbecue joint with an amphitheater out back. The whole loop is under a mile on foot, which is the point: in this part of Austin you can hear a blues band, a jazz trio, and a rock headliner without ever moving your car.
