Few acres of ground hold more early Texas history than Morton Cemetery in Richmond. Founded in 1825 by 'Old 300' colonist William Morton, it is one of the oldest cemeteries in the state, and its stones read like a roll call of the Republic: Jane Long, the 'Mother of Texas'; Mirabeau B. Lamar, second president of the Republic of Texas; senators, judges, and pioneers who shaped Fort Bend County. Morton's own hand-built brick tomb here is considered the first Masonic landmark in Texas. This gentle walk leads through the cemetery and to the nearby markers and homes of the people buried within it, connecting the graves to the lives they commemorate. It is a peaceful, contemplative route — a chance to stand where the founders of a nation-that-was now rest. Please walk respectfully, stay on the paths, and take care around older monuments.
