About this tour

A few East Side blocks off Paso Hondo and Commerce hold one of the most concentrated historic-cemetery districts in Texas — Confederate veterans, US Army dead, German fraternal lodge brothers, an Orthodox Jewish congregation, and Catholic faithful, all buried within easy walking distance of one another. This walk moves through eight distinct nineteenth-century cemeteries, each carved from the same original 40-acre city burial grant, tracing how one municipal cemetery multiplied into a patchwork of faiths and fraternities that still stands, block by block, today.
