Old Town Spring is a pocket of 19th-century Texas kept alive as a shopping village — a knot of old wood-frame buildings that grew up around the railroad in the 1870s, boomed as a rail hub, then faded and was reborn as a district of some hundred shops and cafés. It is also, by local reckoning, one of the most haunted little towns in the country, with dozens of its storefronts carrying a story. This gentle evening walk threads the historic core, leading with the real railroad-town history of each building — the saloon, the depot, the old houses — and then, where the legend lives, telling the ghost tale plainly as folklore. The star is the Wunsche Bros Cafe, a 1902 saloon whose founder is said to still be minding the place. Bring comfortable shoes, browse a shop or two, and treat the stories as the town's own well-loved tradition, half history and half campfire.
