History

The Gotcher-Spalding family cemetery lies near the site of James Gotcher's cabin in southeastern Bastrop County, close to the Pin Oak community. Gotcher had been commissioned in the 1830s to cut the road linking San Felipe de Austin and Mina (Bastrop) that became known as Gotier's Trace. In February 1837 a raid on the family cabin killed several Gotchers and carried off Mrs. Crawford and the children, who were later ransomed by Charles Spalding, giving the cemetery its double name.
