History

This East Side landmark grew from a 1918 effort by the Colored Library Association to serve San Antonio's African American community; a new library and auditorium was built in 1929 and renamed in the 1930s to honor Dr. George Washington Carver. It offered a refuge from the segregation of the city's public libraries and theaters, and after the library closed in 1973 the building reopened in 1977 as the Carver Community Cultural Center; it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.
