History

The San Antonio Casino Club Building is a distinctive triangle-shaped structure erected in 1927 along the River Walk at Crockett and Press Streets, combining Art Deco architecture with Mayan-inspired detailing. It was built for the Casino Club, formed in 1925 from the merger of the older Casino Club (1854) and San Antonio Club (1881), and originally held dining rooms, dormitories, and a ballroom. Financial trouble during the Depression forced its sale in 1940, and oilman Thomas Gilcrease bought it in 1942 to house his company and Western art collection. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 and now serves as apartments with a ground-floor restaurant.
