History
The ten-story, 200-room Robert E. Lee Hotel was completed in 1923 as the tallest hotel in San Antonio, one of three Travis Street buildings erected by the Travis Investment Company. Its rooftop red neon sign, added in 1938, became a city landmark; the hotel closed in 1976 over fire-code violations and was saved with state and federal grants and converted into apartments in the mid-1990s.
