History

Founded in 1858 by German immigrants of the Casino Club, the German-English School offered secular instruction in both German and English in San Antonio's La Villita district. The cornerstone of its first stone building was laid in 1859 and dedicated to the poet Friedrich von Schiller, with additional buildings following in the 1860s. Sold for debt in 1897, the property later housed the George W. Brackenridge school and, from 1926, San Antonio Junior College.
