History

This La Villita marker honors John Coffee 'Jack' Hays (1817-1883), the celebrated Texas Ranger captain who made San Antonio his base after arriving in late 1836. Hays worked as a deputy surveyor in the Bexar district and was later elected county surveyor, all while leading ranger companies that fought Comanche raiders and, during the Mexican-American War, served with distinction. Hays County is named in his honor.
