History

La Villita, on the south bank of the San Antonio River, was one of the city's first neighborhoods, beginning as a settlement of jacales for soldiers of the nearby Mission San Antonio de Valero and rebuilt in brick, stone, and adobe after an 1819 flood. In 1836 it lay along Santa Anna's cannon line during the siege of the Alamo; the city restored the district beginning in 1939, and it is now a National Register arts village.
