The school's roots go back to 1903, when Physicians' and Surgeons' Hospital opened in San Antonio and enrolled a first class of 16 nursing students. The hospital became part of Baptist Memorial Hospital after Baptists took control in 1948, and the nursing school grew into a cluster of programs as surgical technology (1955), medical imaging (1959) and vocational nursing (1988) were added. It awarded its first Associate of Applied Science in Nursing degrees in 2009, won approval for online RN-to-BSN and healthcare-management bachelor's degrees in 2012 and 2013, and added a Master of Science in Nursing in 2017. Baptist Health System was bought by Vanguard Health Systems in 2003, and Vanguard became part of Tenet Healthcare in 2013.
