UT Health San Antonio

The institution began as the South Texas Medical School, chartered in 1959. Its first class of 15 medical students enrolled in 1966 and studied in temporary quarters while the school's first building went up in what became the South Texas Medical Center on the city's northwest side; that building was completed in 1968. The Legislature added a dental school in 1969 and a nursing school in 1970, and in 1972, with new schools of allied health and biomedical sciences, the campus was designated The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio under first president Frank Harrison. H. Ross Perot's 1987 gift created its Institute of Biotechnology, and in the early 2000s it opened a Regional Academic Health Center in the Rio Grande Valley and dedicated the Children's Cancer Research Institute. In 2007 it acquired the Cancer Therapy & Research Center, and a $25 million gift from Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long led to the main campus being named for the couple. Its cancer center, now the Mays Cancer Center, is designated by the National Cancer Institute. Long known publicly as UT Health San Antonio, the center merged with The University of Texas at San Antonio on September 1, 2025, becoming the health science center of the combined UT San Antonio.
