History
The school began in 1947, when the San Antonio Baptist Association approved missionary Paul J. Siebenmann's plan for a training school for Mexican American pastors and church workers, and its first classes met at Palm Heights Baptist Church in January 1948. First called the Mexican Baptist Training School and then the Mexican Baptist Bible Institute, it bought a building at West Martin and North Leona streets in 1950 and moved in 1964 to a new South Pan Am Expressway campus built with gifts from the Texas Woman's Missionary Union and philanthropist Willard W. Rollins. After a 1982 merger with Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary it became Hispanic Baptist Theological Seminary, returned to Baptist General Convention of Texas control in 1989, and was renamed Hispanic Baptist Theological School in 1999. Taking the name Baptist University of the Américas in 2003, it began granting accredited college degrees and broadened its teaching beyond Spanish, and it now operates from a campus on Barlite Boulevard in south San Antonio.
