Palo Alto College grew out of a campaign by Communities Organized for Public Services (COPS), a largely Hispanic grassroots group, to bring higher education to San Antonio's historically underserved South Side. The Alamo Community College District board approved the college in February 1983 and the Legislature chartered it that March; it began with 231 students taking classes in high schools and on military bases, with offices at Billy Mitchell Village. First classes under the new college came in 1985, and its original campus off West Villaret Boulevard opened with eleven buildings. Today the college serves students across Bexar and nearby counties, runs programs from logistics to nursing, and in 2024 began offering a bachelor's degree in operations management.
