History

Robert James Calder, born in Baltimore in 1810, came to Texas in 1832 and commanded Company K of the First Regiment of Texas Volunteers at the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836. In February 1837 he was elected the first sheriff of Brazoria County, later serving as mayor, chief justice, and probate judge before moving to Fort Bend County. In 1881 he unveiled a Galveston monument to the nine Texans killed at San Jacinto. The Texas Historical Commission marked his memory in Angleton in 2004.
