The college opened in 1948 as Alvin Junior College, sharing its boundaries with the Alvin Independent School District under a 6-4-4 grade plan that was the first of its kind in Texas. It won full membership in the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools in 1959, and in 1966 it moved to a new campus of about sixty acres on Mustang Road, the same year it began the first Texas prison extension program at the Ramsey Unit. The college became its own taxing district with an elected board in 1971, launched a court-reporting program that drew students from across the country, and took the name Alvin Community College in 1976. Future Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan studied there during early off-seasons, and a museum devoted to his baseball career now sits on the main campus. In November 2025 the Board of Regents renamed the school Alvin College as part of a new brand identity.
