History

Heflin Cemetery takes its name from William Ward and Pency (Williams) Heflin, who settled the area in 1875 and donated the land for a community burial ground. Local tradition holds that the first grave was that of a child who died in 1876; the earliest marked grave, that of Robert Bonine, also dates to 1876. Interments include many area pioneers and veterans from the Civil War through World War II, and the Texas Historical Commission awarded a marker in 1994.
