History
Indian Creek Cemetery lies at the site of the vanished farming community of Indian Creek in southern Brown County, near Brownwood. Its best-known interment is Pulitzer Prize–winning author Katherine Anne Porter, born Callie Russell Porter here on May 15, 1890; her ashes were placed beside her mother's grave, and a Texas historical marker honoring her was erected at the cemetery in 1990. The burial ground was one of three area cemeteries affected when the U.S. War Department acquired surrounding land in 1940 to create Camp Bowie.
