History

Connell Cemetery is believed to be one of the oldest burial grounds in Brown County, with graves predating 1861. It is named for pioneer William Connell, a Texas resident from 1834 who served in the army of the Republic and as Brown County treasurer; when he and Loumisa Connell buried their son William Archibald in 1866, they erected what is thought to be the site's first headstone. The cemetery was deeded to Brown County in 1893 and holds sixteen documented families along with more than twenty unmarked graves.
