History
Fort Croghan was established on March 18, 1849, as one of the first federal forts built to guard the Texas frontier against raids, and it was named for Colonel George Croghan. Set on Hamilton Creek a few miles south of present Burnet, it anchored a chain of posts running from Fort Worth toward Fort Inge. Soldiers built its quarters, hospital, blacksmith shop and other structures, and the fort was abandoned in 1855 once the frontier line had moved west. Several restored and relocated log buildings survive today as the Fort Croghan Grounds and Museum.
