History

Dr. James Fentress, born in Tennessee in 1802, was the first physician near Prairie Lea in Caldwell County and a large landholder who fought in the Battle of Plum Creek on August 12, 1840. When the community was renamed in 1892, it took the name Fentress in his honor. He died in 1872 and is remembered with a State of Texas marker erected in 1936.
