History

The Masonic cemetery is one of several burial grounds in Prairie Lea, the oldest community in Caldwell County, settled in 1839 and named by Sam Houston for Margaret Lea. The Masonic order was active in the community from an early date, opening the Prairie Lea Academy in 1852, and the fraternal cemetery reflects that long Masonic presence in the town ten miles southwest of Lockhart.
