History

Maxwell Cemetery serves the small farming community of Maxwell in western Caldwell County. The town was originally called New Martindale but was renamed in 1887, when the Katy (Missouri-Kansas-Texas) Railroad was built through it, in honor of Thomas Maxwell, who had received the surrounding land grant in 1845. The roughly four-acre burial ground is one of several cemeteries that grew up around the railroad settlement, which by 1914 supported some 225 residents, two churches, and several cotton gins.
