History
The Burkett pecan originated from a native tree found about 1900 in the bottomlands of Callahan County after the young sons of horticulturist J. H. Burkett gathered unusually fine pecans from a squirrel's nest. Recognizing their quality, Burkett (1861-1945) propagated the variety, and it became one of the most important pecans in the Texas industry. The parent tree was recorded as a Texas Historic Landmark in 1966.
