History
The Carson County Square House Museum in Panhandle is built around the historic Square House, a white frame residence constructed in the late 1880s with lumber shipped from Kansas for a Southern Kansas Railway representative. Moved to its present site and opened as a museum in 1967, the complex has grown to include some twenty-one buildings, galleries, and outdoor exhibits, among them a 1912 church and a 1928 Santa Fe caboose. Its more than 10,000 artifacts and a full-sized diorama tell the story of the Texas Panhandle from mammoth hunters to the 1920s oil boom, and the museum is nationally accredited.
