History

This burial ground serves the Smyrna community about six miles southeast of Atlanta in eastern Cass County, which pioneers had settled by the 1880s and named for the persecuted early Christian church of the ancient city of Smyrna. Ten residents organized the Smyrna Baptist Church in 1882, and the congregation acquired the cemetery tract around the turn of the century; many of the county's early pioneers are buried here. The Smyrna Baptist Church received a Texas Historical Marker in 1982.
