History

Riverland Cemetery is the surviving landmark of Riverland, a Clay County community that took shape around 1870 when settlers returned after Civil War-era frontier raids and secured a post office in 1875 under postmaster John Jones. In the 1880s the town had about fifty residents, a doctor, and a dentist, some of them Russian German families, but it declined through the twentieth century until only the cemetery and a few rural residents remained.
