History
The guard house is the only surviving building of Camp Colorado, a U.S. Army frontier post moved to this Coleman County site on Mukewater Creek in 1856 to protect settlers. Its garrison included future notable officers, among them Earl Van Dorn, Edmund Kirby Smith, John Bell Hood, and Fitzhugh Lee, and Robert E. Lee inspected the camp at least twice. Federal troops abandoned the post in February 1861 at the start of the Civil War, after which it briefly anchored the state's frontier defense line.
