History

Camp Colorado Cemetery was established in 1857 to serve the nearby U.S. Army post, which had moved to the Coleman County site in 1856 to guard the frontier before Federal troops abandoned it in 1861. Rock walls enclose individual and grouped graves, many marked only by native stones. Most of the soldiers' remains were later removed, some to the national cemetery in San Antonio and others to Frankfort, Kentucky, though the large rock wall around the soldiers' section remains. The State of Texas erected the marker in 1936.
