History

The Trickham community, a Coleman County settlement dating to the 1850s along Mukewater Creek, has two cemeteries, with the earliest graves in the old townsite dating from the 1860s. In the late 1870s residents began burying their dead on a hill west of town, and in 1893 Mrs. M.M. Sanders, who had moved to the county from Clark County, Mississippi, found many graves beneath a large oak on her land and had a five-and-one-half-acre plot fenced and deeded to the community as a free burial ground. Trickham lay along the historic military and cattle-trail routes that crossed the region in the mid-19th century.
