History

Old Wellington Cemetery is the original portion of what is now Memorial Gardens Cemetery, north of Wellington in Collingsworth County. During a 1912 typhoid epidemic the cemetery was blamed for polluting the local water supply and was closed, prompting the cemetery association to acquire Fairview Cemetery; after new wells were drilled it reopened, and longtime residents still call the older section Old Wellington or Wellington Cemetery. It holds well over a thousand graves and carries a Historic Texas Cemetery designation.
