History

The Brauntex Theatre in downtown New Braunfels opened on January 6, 1942, just weeks after Pearl Harbor, with a screening of Bing Crosby's 'Birth of the Blues.' Built for the Oklahoma-based Griffith theater chain and designed by Dallas architects Jack Corgan and William J. Moore, it is a late Art Deco movie palace. Rescued from demolition by a local nonprofit in 1999 and reopened in 2000 as a performing arts venue, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.
