History

This cemetery serves the Mercer's Gap community in southwestern Comanche County, about ten miles southwest of Comanche. The settlement was named for pioneer Jesse Mercer, who arrived in the county in 1848; a post office operated there from about 1870 until 1908, and by 1890 Mercer's Gap had two churches, a school, and a burial ground beside the Mercer's Gap Baptist Church.
