History
Evergreen Cemetery serves the old Evergreen community of northern Comanche County, which took shape in the late 1860s. A strip of land was set aside for burials in 1885, the year Mrs. W. F. Hampton became the first person interred here; further land was added by donation in 1897 and by purchase in 1918. The burial ground grew to serve the neighboring communities of Pettit, Gustine and Energy, and by the late 1990s held roughly 630 graves, including Confederate veterans and soldiers of both World Wars. The Texas Historical Commission erected a marker for the cemetery in 1999.
