History
Mission San Clemente was a temporary mission established in 1684 by the expedition of Juan Dominguez de Mendoza, accompanied by Fray Nicolas Lopez, at the request of the Jumano Indians who sought Christianity and Spanish friendship. It is considered the first mission founded in Texas east of the Pecos River, though its exact site has long been debated. The State of Texas placed a commemorative marker in Concho County, north of Millersview, in 1936.
