History

The Monroe Shops at 2111 South Corinth Street were built in 1914 as the heavy-repair maintenance facility for the Southern Traction Company's interurban rail lines, where the Dallas-Corsicana and Dallas-Waco routes met at Trinity Heights. The 275-foot red brick building ran three tracks the length of its main bay. Interurban passenger service ended in 1948, and after decades of other uses DART acquired the building in 1991, restoring it as the first publicly owned National Register building to earn LEED Platinum and reopening it in 2011 as its police headquarters. It was listed on the National Register in 2007.
