History

The Stanard-Tilton Flour Mill at 2400 South Ervay Street, also known as the American Beauty Mill, was built in 1912 during the redevelopment of Dallas's industrial sector after the 1908 Trinity River flood. It became the largest flour-milling operation in the community, descended from a grist mill run for much of the nineteenth century by pioneer businesswoman Sarah Horton Cockrell before the St. Louis firm Stanard-Tilton bought the concern in 1892. The mill closed in 1973, was designated a Dallas Landmark in 1996 and listed on the National Register in 1997, and is now the American Beauty Mill Lofts.
