A central gabled bay features a heavy, round arched entry portico and four round corner pavilions are topped with conical roofs and finials. The first floor is distinguished by canted gray limestone.

The Dallas County Courthouse, known as 'Old Red,' was built in 1892 of red sandstone with rusticated marble accents in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, designed by architect Max A. Orlopp Jr. of the Little Rock firm Orlopp & Kusener. Because four of five previous courthouses on the site had been destroyed by fire, the building was constructed of masonry and cut stone. It was the setting for notable events including a 1904 temperance lecture by Carrie Nation, the 1910 lynching of Allen Brooks, and the 1935 swearing-in of Sarah T. Hughes as Texas's first female judge, and President Kennedy's motorcade passed it minutes before his assassination in 1963. Replaced as the county courthouse in 1966, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 12, 1976, and now houses the Old Red Museum.
