The Dallas County Junior College District was created in May 1965, with Bill J. Priest serving as founding chancellor until 1981. Its first school, El Centro College, welcomed roughly 4,000 first-year students in fall 1966 inside a converted eight-story former Sanger department store on Main Street downtown, a building now on the National Register of Historic Places. Eastfield and Mountain View followed in 1970 and Richland in 1972, the district renamed itself the Dallas County Community College District that same year, and Cedar Valley, North Lake (both 1977) and Brookhaven (1978) completed the lineup of seven colleges. In 2020 the district won accreditors' approval to merge its seven separately accredited colleges into one institution, renamed itself Dallas College, and turned the former colleges into campuses of a single school.
