History
This burial ground is the cemetery of La Plata, the vanished first county seat of Deaf Smith County. Established in 1890 as Grenada by the XIT Ranch, the town was renamed La Plata after winning a contested 1890 county-seat election, but it was bypassed by the railroad and lost the seat to Hereford (then Blue Water) in 1899, after which its buildings were hauled away by wagon. Today a few broken foundations, a well, and two toppled headstones with part of a wrought-iron fence in the La Plata Cemetery mark the townsite, where a historical marker was erected in 1960.
